hello friends!
I wanted to share the story of our newest ecstatic dance devotee, Jenny Trerise! I hope Jenny’s story inspires you to come dance with us this Saturday!
;) <3
Hi Jenny! What’s your background in dance/previous experience dancing?
My background or experience was basically zero. I was raised in a home where dancing wasn’t allowed and as an adult always worried I didn’t know how or would look stupid. At weddings or birthday parties I would look longingly at everyone dancing having a good time and wished I was out there.
What was her physical/mental response the first time you tried ecstatic dance and what made you want to come back?
I was actually shocked I didn’t feel more subconscious but I think because I’ve been coming to TYU for quite a while to do yoga it felt like a safe space to try this new thing. I left feeling calm and like I’d gotten a warm hug. I keep coming back because it brings so much positive energy to my life!
Has anything shifted about how you’re experiencing life outside of dancing?
Oh boy, it sure has! I’ve decided I’m not going to let my impression of myself or the impression I THINK others have of me to rob me of joy! (spoiler alert everybody’s too worried about themselves to care what I look like)
Is there any advice or strategies you employ when you’re feeling nervous/scared/resistant to dance?
I close my eyes (or at least mostly so I don’t bump into anyone :)) and just do what I feel like doing. Sometimes sitting still or laying down, sometimes putting my hands on my heart and feeling myself breathe or jumping up and down (he prompts Rosalie gives also help so much for ideas of how you can move).
I would say if it sounds remotely interesting or pulls at you TRY IT! Life is too short not to try something that might be your favorite thing ever!
Thanks for offering this class Brittany! It’s life changing!
come dance with jenny & i this saturday at 9am–for FREE!
xx,
brittany
