guest writer: meet rosalie!

The Ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes

hello friends!

Rosalie shared the most gorgeous piece of her own writing this past Saturday at Ecstatic Dance–I’m thrilled to share it with you as well <3

“Releasing the mind, releasing the thinking is not a demand of manicuring and sterilizing; it is not one of removing, excising, killing, or controlling. It is not one of perfecting into stasis, into one last final arrival.

It is one of re-wilding, returning it to wholeness and letting it be held in its natural environment – the body.

Just as we are not separate from the nature that surrounds us – us being animals and all – our minds are not separate from the body.

Just as the front garden is not separate from the alpine desert that surrounds it, the mind is not separate from the body it’s housed in.

Perhaps we should aim to stop manicuring our minds into sterilized plots of perfectly trimmed Kentucky blue grass by way of herbicide and chopping blades.

Perhaps we should throw out aiming for anything in particular altogether, even stopping.

Perhaps the body, without any effort, will reclaim the mind back into its wild, brilliant beauty.

Recently, we’ve been telling each other the mind is in fact the whole of the problem.
To which I ask: What problem? Humanity fully expressed and alive?

Even further, we’ve been telling each other to throw it out altogether.

Something deep in my bones rattles and shakes, rebels in response: they want me to know – there is always another way.

I imagine an alternative: letting the mind and body re-member into their collaborative wholeness. The body, the home, the container, in which we return to over and over after wandering, adventuring, exploring the mind. The place of rest and integration after learning how to navigate, cultivate, and nurture the mind.

I imagine the body loves the mind, is the mind, the way the body yearns to hold and nurture the mind. The mind is our body, is our home, just as much as the world, the earth is our bodies’ home.

I offer the reminder of choice to come back into the body not to shame our mind and its thinking ways, but rather to help us recover our natural inclination of navigating it.

After all, the defining factor of having this experience of life in a human body is that we get to think about it. Thought births creation: creation of conscious action; art; showing, receiving, and sharing love. And maybe best of all – the ability to brush up against a fuller understanding of the gravity of our situation: that we are here alive, experiencing each other and the world around us.”
