a glimpse into the life of a tyu ytt grad:

What training(s) have you done with the yoga underground?
I’ve taken the 200hr YTT in May 2021. I’m looking forward to taking the 300hr YTT!

What was your favorite part of YTT?
I had many favorites moments/aspects of YTT: 1) being in the presence of a group of badass folks who also wanted to be better 2) meditation sessions and learning about my brain 3) gaining confidence in myself 4) holding yoga sessions at Kiwanis Park 5) learning how to sequence from incomparable and wonderful Brittany.

What’s your life like now?

Life now! I’m a middle school theatre teacher :) I’ve moved to Sandy, Utah, but still travel back to Provo occasionally for yoga because there’s nowhere like The Yoga Underground. I’m going to start teaching short yoga sessions to the other teachers at my school! I rock climb a lot, and hike with my doggo and husband and try to keep my small artist/painting business alive.

What do you still use that you learned in your YTTs & how?
I still use SO much of what I learned from YTT. When I get asked any question about spirituality, beliefs, confidence, or movement, I always trace my roots of self-confidence and personal growth to YTT. YTT was a catalyst for me in discovering ME. So truly, I use every bit of what I learned. I’ve kept the meditation manual/worksheets from Stephen and look back at those and my yoga notes often. In theatre, I use yoga, movement, and breathwork to help my student actors become better acquainted with their bodies. In acting, our tools are our bodies, so yoga and meditation is immensely helpful!

Much of my artwork/paintings also reflect what I learned through YTT. I love trying to paint breath, bodies, and abstract concepts. I also love painting experiences, such as a moment on a hike or a small stone that was in my path. Yoga taught me to slow down and appreciate the present, to enjoy the here and now. Utilizing that ability, I can find more experiences to draw from when I paint. I think it speaks to a similar feeling we all have as humans.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve done using your YTT certification?
Using my YTT certification, I taught yoga at The Quarry, a local climbing gym. It was such a fun atmosphere where I could tune my knowledge about the body to specifically help those that wanted to climb better! As stated earlier, I’m also about to start instructing teachers at the middle school I work at. I’m excited to help them gain some peace at the end of our work day.

What advice would you give to someone interested in doing YTT?
To those interested in taking YTT, do it. Take the leap! For me, being in person shortly after the COVID pandemic was soul-saving. Surrounding yourself with others who are on a similar path and inspiring you along the way… what is not to be gained? Before YTT, I was only kind of into yoga and didn’t really know what I wanted to do or who I was. This course is so much more than a yoga teacher training. It is a training in understanding, trusting, and believing in yourself. It is a training that leads you to make decisions that you LOVE. It is a training that will help you more fully fall in love with life. If that’s what you’re looking for… enjoy :)
